Absolute Beginner Adult Tap Class

 


Class Notes


Master the basics in this hour long class 👞🎶


Basics covered:

1. Steps - simply place ball of the foot on the floor and transfer weight to that leg

2. Stamps - flat foot on the floor with weight - fun to play with for dynamics

Pattern Play:  A-A-B-B-A       (A = 4 steps 2 stamps / B = 2 steps 2 stamps)

3. Toe Drops - the typical toe tap we do when we hear a beat we love!  Lift toe and drop back down.  Keep knees bent for more volume.  

4. Heel Drops - Lift the heel then press down into the floor, knees always bent.

5. Leaps - shift our weight from one foot to the other and aim to land on the balls of your feet.  

6. Hops aka Heels - stay on one foot and hop, heels up for clean single sound on landing.  These don't need to be high just a clear sound.  If hop isn't a option for you, modifify to a single heel sound.

7. Toe Digs - knock the tip of the shoe on the ground

8. Heel Digs - reach the leg out and knock the back of the shoe on the floor 

9. Brush - the ball of the foot strikes the floor forward 

10. Back Brush aka Spank - brush the ball of the foot back

11. Shuffle - brush front back - we talked about technique here and I want to encourage you to play with that.  

Where is your foot ending on the back swing?  Behind your supporting leg or in front of it?  Practice seated! 

12. Flap - Brush forward and land Ball of Foot on the Floor

shUffle = U for Up   Flap = Floor 

13. Paradiddle aka Paddle N Roll - Heel dig, brush / spank, step, heel = 4 sounds 

Practice alternating feet right, left, right, left - knees bent and if you aim to build speed make the weight transfer on the step and left the second leg on the heel to be ready to go.

heel drop BALL change, HEEL DROP ball CHANGE

paradiddle (heel dig, brush, step heel)

PARADIDDLE (HEEL DIG, BRUSH, STEP, HEEL)

stamp STAMP clap 

step STEP clap

crawl both feet together heels, toes, heels, toes moving right

chug both feet, then 3 more chugs right, LEFT, right

FLAP HEEL, flap heel, FLAP HEEL, flap heel 

SHUFFLE TOE SHUFFLE STEP 

shuffle, shuffle, shuffle step
